Archives of the Big Bend kicks off 50th anniversary celebration March 5

The Archives of the Big Bend proudly marks its 50th anniversary in 2026, commemorating five decades of dedication to preserving the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Big Bend region.

To kick off the yearlong celebration, author Joe Burgess will present his book, Big Bend Through the Lens of Glenn Burgess: A Photo Journey in Mid-Century West Texas, on Thursday, March 5, at 5:30 p.m. A temporary exhibit of his father’s photographic prints, field equipment and cameras, and ephemera from the early years of Big Bend National Park will be displayed in the Reading Room in Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library on the Sul Ross Alpine Campus.

Since its establishment in 1976, the Archives has served as an invaluable resource for scholars, residents and visitors seeking to explore the stories and artifacts that define the Big Bend region. Over the past 50 years, the Archives of the Big Bend has collected, preserved and made accessible thousands of documents, photographs, maps and oral histories. It has played a vital role in supporting academic research, community initiatives, and public education, helping to safeguard the unique legacy of the region.

“To reach our 50th anniversary is a milestone that reflects the hard work and commitment of past and present staff and researchers,” said Betsy Helesic, director of Library and Archives. “We look forward to celebrating this achievement with the community and continuing our mission well into the future, starting with Joe Burgess’ book talk,” added Head of Archives Victoria Contreras.

The yearlong celebration will feature a variety of special events and fundraising initiatives designed to highlight the Archives’ history and vision for the future. Community members, researchers and supporters are invited to join in the festivities and take part in honoring five decades of preservation and storytelling.

In Big Bend Through the Lens of Glenn Burgess, author Joe Burgess brings to life the creation of the Big Bend National Park with highlights of the surrounding region in his presentation on his new book featuring 395 of Glenn Burgess’s photographs and his personal and sometimes poignant commentary.

Copies of Burgess’ book available for purchase at the event, and the display will remain at the Archives of the Big Bend through Nov. 6. Visitors are welcome to view the temporary exhibit Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m.
